will hyde reveals otherworldly ballad "dark until september."
Every now and then, you’ll see an artist emerge with such a strong sense of direction, that it almost takes you a moment to catch up. That’s how we’ve been feeling about will hyde, since his debut hit “easy for u.” took the Aussie pop music scene by storm. At only 20 years old, will’s music has the confidence and depth of someone much more experienced (perhaps testament to his uber-successful high school foray into the music industry, as one half of producer duo SYDE).
His latest track “dark until september.” has proven what we already knew about him - he is a bloody star. Sure, his previous three releases were insanely well-produced and well-written pop bangers, but this single is something different. A painfully honest, open-hearted ballad, “dark until september.” reveals an entirely new side to will, and promises that his upcoming EP “with u in mind.” (out in October) will be so much more than your typical debut pop release.
This track takes a gorgeous, expansive acoustic direction, with layered harmonies that hark back to artists like Angus and Julia Stone, Bon Iver and The Paper Kites. From the first line, the melody and lyrics are goosebump-worthy. The pared-back chorus, with shimmering guitars and driving yet soft percussion, hits you right where it hurts. The repeated refrain, “It’s dark until september; I hope she remembers me. ‘Cause we left on a bad note, and there were no apologies,” is an absolutely stunning piece of lyricism, delivered with a flayed honesty that will stop you in your tracks.
We can envision this song as the main theme of a coming of age movie, and there’s no doubt that it will soundtrack many an angsty teenage bus ride in the rain as more and more people discover this incredible artist.
You need to get on board with will hyde; this song has proven more than any of his releases yet that he is going to big places.
