Shahrae Turns Down the Brightness in her Latest Single “Control”
Alt-pop princess Shahrae turns on the doom and gloom in latest track “Control”. A song to get the blood pumping, “Control” is a dark shift for the Adelaide born, Melbourne residing up and coming artist.
“Control” or the lack thereof, inhibits Shahrae’s spinning out, the parts of yourself that you least like that seem to have the strongest grasp on your being and can leave you feeling defeated and absolutely out of control.
“I wanted to write about feeling as if a part of yourself that you don’t really like, or maybe even your mental health, like depression, anxiety, is the one pulling the strings and taking the steering wheel. It’s the one in your head making decisions while you just watch and suffer the consequences” tells Shahrae.
Lyrically, this track came quite organically to Shahrae, upon hearing the bass track co-produced by Ruby Sandapa, the words instantly spilled out for “Control”. Perpetuating the song’s message Shahrae has adopted distorted vocals inducing its full anxiety. Contextually, this song is a little downbeat and dreary but the beat is something else. On the surface “Control” is rhythmically refreshing, a track with vibrant energy.
Shahrae has been causing a commotion in the music industry since she was 15 years old, starting on the streets of Adelaide she has busked her way into the hearts of many. Turning to the hustle and bustle of the digital age, Shahrae began a Youtube channel in 2016 that has since amassed over 700,000 views and upward of 15,000 subscribers. Since the release of her 2019 debut EP “Awkward” in 2019 Shahrae took out the title of Asia-Pacific winner of The Vans Musicians Wanted competition, and has had her biggest single “Like The Others Do” turned into an MTV produced music video filmed in Malaysia. You may have even seen Shahrae on the big stage of Laneway Festival.
Still young, Shahrae has already proven her range and brilliance, whatever comes next for the newcomer will certainly be exciting!
