Jordan Laser Finds Herself in Stunningly Sombre "Battleship"
Searching for one’s identity is not a new concept for Jordan Laser. At thirteen years old, the Sydney-based singer/songwriter began writing her own original songs; before long, she was recording an EP with Midnight Oil’s Rob Hirst and Jim Moginie, establishing her as a talented artist with a promising future. Following this, Laser took some time away from performing to expand her sound while also exploring a path as a producer. During this time, she created “Battleship,” an offering that exemplifies the sound of an artist coming into their own.
Written and recorded between Laser’s living room and a studio located above a Camperdown pub, “Battleship” combines pulsing bass lines with brooding drums to highlight Laser’s mesmerisingly distinct vocals. It’s a signal of what’s to come in future tracks, yet there’s still an air of mystery that keeps us intrigued, urging us to stick along for the ride to see what she has up her sleeve next. The lyrics are poetic, delving into the disillusionment of a souring relationship before one accepts the reality of it. Laser’s lyrical prowess proves that she has a talent for hitting her listeners right in the feels, tugging on every heartstring possible as she explores the pain and numbness that comes with the end of her relationship. There seems to be a theme of losing, then finding yourself during this time.
“I was feeling pretty lost and lovelorn when I wrote it,” she says. “You want a rescue squad, but then you realise that no one is coming. Or maybe the person who is coming isn’t a very good swimmer. Either way, you’re on your own, falling back onto yourself.”
There’s no question that Jordan Laser is ready to blossom as she prepares for what is sure to be a fruitful musical career. “Battleship” is only the beginning, and we can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next.
