Melbourne singer-songwriter MIJO has unveiled his new single “You’ve Got Your Life” - a bright indie surf-rock track with a catchy melody and clear, resonant vocal. The track is distinctly unique to MIJO's usual melancholic compositions, standing out as a significantly lively and optimistic tune. The track’s light, fun sound contrasts with its subject matter, which charts the sombre journey of facing the harshest reality of all - our mortality through to the sudden enlivening realisation that we are here, now, alive, but certainly not forever.

MIJO explains, “Through the loss of a close friend I reflected on the fact that he was gone, forever, yet I was still here. Life is precious. Life is precarious. There is a chasm between being merely alive, and fully living a life. This song implores you to seek the latter.”

The track begs the pointed question; “You’ve got your life… so what are you going to do with it?

The single is accompanied by a gorgeous lyric video, where the lyrics roll in over impressionistic artworks. Much like the contrasting lyrics and sound, the video swaps between colourful artworks, to darker themed works.

MIJO has experienced a rewarding career as an already established and respected artist for over a decade and proud co-creator of critically acclaimed band Lamplight, as well as his current solo creations. In his solo career, MIJO has toured 13 countries in Europe and been featured as a support act to renowned artists such as GoyteMissy HigginsClare Bowditch and Tommy Emmanuel, both in Australia and abroad.

MIJO is willing to go the extra mile for his craft, eager to push the concept of solitude as a pathway to inspiration, once travelling to Iceland where he stayed alone in a remote weatherboard cabin, surrounded by mountains and a breathtaking fjord. “It was dead quiet. Shockingly quiet,” he said. “In the midst of the silence, the only thing I could hear were my innermost thoughts waiting to manifest into new songs.” MIJO’s month-long songwriting retreat formed the genesis for a creative shift. It was the crucial starting point for his upcoming record, to be released later this year.

Along with being a prolific songwriter, MIJO is a creative mindset coach, vegan of 18 years, sunny optimist [usually seen sporting a bright yellow t-shirt]; and determined to find the golden thread running through the mess of life.

You’ve Got Your Life is available to stream on all platforms now.

Praise for MIJO:

“Moody, heartbreaking, stunning, f#$king epic.” - Beat Magazine

“Lamplight and a sold-out Northcote Social Club travelled an intense nautically themed journey that was part sea-shanty, part thrash, part croon, and completely fucking breathtaking. The night saw an aggressive and vivid live beast unleashed after many months of recording.” - Beat Magazine

“Fantastic haunting pop. There are Buckley-esque tones to the vocals - perfect for the soaring melodies. Lovely warm, acoustic instrumentation. Defo one for fans of Augie March, Mum, Beirut etc.” - Dan Buhagiar, Triple J Radio
