Lavrence Embraces Identity and Gets Groovy with New Single "Nightshade"

After absolutely crushing 2019, filling a huge gap in the Australian music scene with his signature 80’s dance style, queer performer Lavrence is back with another banger. His new single “Nightshade” showcases a beautifully balanced ballad of self-expression and groovy tune that calls upon party-goers everywhere to stop and dance.

More than its funky sonics, however, the song is a moving commentary on identity; “Nightshade” echoes everything Lavrence stands for and extends an arm to those longing to belong, fostering a sense of unity through expression of self. Hailing from Sydney, it feels clear that Lavrence is here to stay, impacting and uniting Sydney’s queer community through his new take on a familiar style with something to say.

His music poses a question of humanity; why exist quietly when your true self is just waiting to shine? Lavrence provides a safe place for all to come out of the dark and express themselves with authenticity and freedom.

The track is accompanied by a gorgeous music video, shot at Sydney LGBT+ hotspot The Imperial in Erskineville, in which LAVRENCE takes you gently by the hand and leads you into the exciting, glittery world of Sydney’s queer community.

“The music video for Nightshade is about a time in my life where I was playing it safe and keeping myself small, hidden,” said LAVRENCE. “I wasn’t aware I was doing that until I attended a wedding and heard the word ‘faggot’ being used so flippantly from one of the guests.

This was around the time of the vote on marriage equality in Australia and the general social tension coupled with this experience forced me out of my apathy. I went home that evening and felt compelled to watch a documentary on LGBTQIA+ history and subsequently wept for hours.

I was confronted with everything I had repressed and kept hidden. I was done being silent or apologetic. I made an unconscious promise to myself that I would live a more brave, authentic life – no matter who it may make uncomfortable.

I wrote Nightshade for myself and in the music video, I’m performing it to that old version of me, the one at the wedding, who wasn’t yet brave enough to be himself but desperately wanted to.”

Accept LAVRENCE and come out of the dark – even if it’s just for three minutes. After that...it’s up to you.
