Dande And The Lion Share How Moments In Their Life Helped Shape Their New Single "Higher Places"
Last week, Dande And The Lion released their new single “Higher Place” - a fully charged, electrifying track that has been in the works for 8 years!!
Taking their trademark indie-electronic sound to a new elevated level, “Higher Places” begins as a slow burner before kicking into the mesmerising, soulful throws of the lead vocals. Obtaining so much strength and character the vocals are the life of this party. Though to no discredit, the instrumentation and production are a perfect pair, a match made in heaven if you will.
The band went into detail on how moments in their life have helped shape and define the electrifying track into what it is today…
Abbey: For me, it was reworking Higher Places after playing it for 3 years. We tried to reinvent the song for ourselves by reworking the melody and structure and I think it really brought the song to life. It was also interesting to see the track evolve into the new direction we are going with Dande And The Lion.
Nicholas: I find Higher Places is the song that reflects the band’s journey together. In the same way that Higher Places has evolved from different titles and lyrics and structures and melodies, so too has the band. A previously unreleased version, as a five piece, went for six minutes. After the departure of our lead singer, it was great to see Natassa step up to the plate and lay her vocals on it, which, since Natassa brought this song to the band, I personally cannot imagine Higher Places any other way.
Natassa: Everything the others said! … Two other defining moments for me was when we rewrote the chorus a few weeks before recording, which totally changed the shape of the song. It's much more punchy and concise with the new version. The second was when we discovered the arpeggio synth while in the studio with Lachlan. As soon as we heard it we all had goosebumps and just looked at each other smiling. It’s subtle, but added to the song in so many great ways.
Chris: There were a few changes made to the song during the pre-production sessions with Lachlan, which helped me with laying down the original drum track. Although the skeleton and drum track has changed since then, the ideas that Lachlan came up with opened up a new way of us analysing our music, which has been invaluable and was a defining moment in our growth as a band.
