Silverchair's Ben Gillies Reminds Us to "Breathe In, Breathe Out"
Exploring a solo career as a former member of a successful band can be incredibly hit-or-miss. Sometimes fans will expect a continuation of the music that they’re used to; other times, a lack of change can sporadically be disappointing.
Ben Gillies has managed to straddle the line between the new and the old, a rare ability that comes to the most talented of musicians. After five years of perfecting his craft and working with new instruments and producers to style his own sound, the former Silverchair drummer has arrived on the solo scene, simultaneously leaving behind and embracing his alt-rock roots. With his brilliant debut single “Breathe In, Breathe Out,” Gillies is having a 70s moment, exploring a more classic acoustic style while still maintaining a contemporary sound.
While the track itself feels timeless, the lyrical content of “Breathe In, Breathe Out” is incredibly relevant in this uncertain times. The track serves as a reminder to take a moment for oneself and to, well, take deep breaths. As he says:
“Breathe In, Breathe Out’ is a microcosm of the human experience. To recognise every moment. To stop, be present, take it in, and not to take it for granted.”
No matter the circumstances, it’s always difficult to take that moment to be present and pause. In his soothing voice, Gillies hammers home his message, inspiring the listener to take heed to his words and have that moment to ourselves.
