Yirrmal Pushes His Talent Further In His Newest Single "Shining Light"
Yirrmal’s talents have elevated him to become ‘one of the most arresting voices in Australian music’ according to The Guardian’s Australia’s Best New Music for September 2022 by Nathan Jolly. Yirrmal has released his fourth single “Shining Light,” runner up in the prestigious 2022 Vanda and Young Global Songwriting Competition.
Best known to mainstream audiences as the vocalist behind the hooks on Baker Boy’s breakthrough single Marryuna, and 2021 standout Ride, Yirrmal says “Shining Light represents my homeland called Yalangbara, also known as Gulurunga’.
"The English name is Port Bradshaw; it's a very special and sacred place for my people, the Rirratjingu clan. It is one of the most significant cultural areas for Yolngu because of it's role in the creation story of the Rirratjingu clan, based on our Djang'kawu ancestors. The shining light above in the sky above guides us to back to our traditional lands of Yalangbara, to our culture and our lore”.
The stunning, sensual and evocative music video for Shining Light was choreographed by world-renowned artistic director of NT Dance Company, Gary Lang, presenting the best of contemporary dance fused and rooted in the traditions of Indigenous Australia.
