Yirrmal Drops Freshest Single "Promise Land"
Yirrmal is the powerful voice of Indigenous beauty that we’re in awe of, and his singer-songwriter capabilities are a testament to his passionate outlook and contribution to his land and his ancestry. Today he releases his brand new single “Promised Land,” featuring the sublimely brilliant Dami Im, in the lead up to his highly anticipated debut album set to drop later this year.
The track transports listeners to a deeply profound story of loss, sadness, grief and heartbreak - the journey to the Promised Land setting the spirit free as the soul is reunited with his ancestors.
The single also exhibits a deeply profound story of loss, sadness, grief and heartbreak, in a way that sets Yirrmal’s soul and spirit free as he is reunited with his ancestors through his journey to reach the Promised Land.
“This track is a very simplified English adaptation of a Yolngu lyric, where the tone conveys the feeling of the journey of the soul as he crosses over into the Promised Land.”
The track kicks in with earthy guitar tones similar to a smooth love ballad as Yirrmal and Dami’s vocals intertwine within each other as the saxophone plays softly in the background, making us melt with warm and fuzzy feelings. The track gives off “final credits” energy as the instrumentals depict the perfect ending to a romance-fuelled film.
In the lead up to his highly anticipated album releasing later this year, Yirrmal revealed, “I think this album is really interesting, it’s exuberant and joyful, but also introspective and emotional; and I wanted to stay true to how I really feel a lot of the time. My life is like a big tapestry, I have a big family, a lot of responsibilities, and it’s very complex, but I also have a lot of love and a lot of love to share through my music. It’s a significant moment on my self-discovery journey.”
Having previously co-wrote three of Baker Boys’ tracks and vocally featured on his 2017 track “Marryuna,” the track zoomed into the 17th spot in triple j’s Hottest 100 of that year. Yirrmal further collaborated with Baker Boy on tracks “Ride” and “Somewhere Deep,” featured on Baker Boy’s debut 2021 album titled “Gela”.
Yirrmal’s self-titled debut album is expected to feature boldness and a celebration of life, produced by Andrew Farriss and recorded by Studios 301 at Andrew’s Piedmont Studio – to be released later in 2022.
"Promised Land" is an ode to First Nations people and the land in which we walk on, both having immense and gracious power, and we can't wait to continually support him with his future works.
