Taylor Janzen Keeps It Real With Her Newest Single ”Push It Down”
Taylor Janzen is back with a single that’s full of honest, cynical emotions we can relate to while still jamming out.
“Push It Down” is, at its surface, a pop song with an upbeat melody that’s accompanied by catchy lyrics and Taylor’s glossy vocals. At its core, it’s a song about the difficulty of going through a depressive episode and hiding those emotions from the world around you. Written during the height of quarantine, the song expresses feelings many young adults have come face to face with in the past year.
“Writing "Push It Down" felt like the mental reset I’ve long needed... although in hindsight I wasn't ready for one at the time. It came together by myself in my room — about my rapidly declining mental health amidst my quarantine-induced brain fog — then immediately put it away and forgot about it. The song is about grasping at anything to feel better, and in the process enabling all my unhealthy tendencies... things like not taking accountability when I’m wrong, impulsive behaviours, isolating myself, refusing to do things that are good for me. A behavior that is unsustainable.
I think a lot of young people are as excited about the return of normalcy, as they are nervous about breaking the now-familiar comfort and safety of less social interaction. I think “Push It Down” can be the cathartic soundtrack to the millions of young people around the world that will have to “shine it on” just a little longer.”
Taylor’s raw and authentic songwriting has garnered her praise from artists such as Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers, as well as The New York Times and NYLON. With two Lollapalooza performances and an upcoming tour alongside X Ambassadors set for this year, it’s clear that this is only the beginning for Taylor Janzen!
