PINKISH BLU – “Superstar”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Review By Kaylah Natoli

Have you ever experienced the moment when someone recommends a movie that you have come across several times but never thought anything of? You only know a minimal amount about the film but already have this predisposition that it’s a cliché teenage rom-com. You know in the back of your mind that you’re never going to watch it but you smile, nod and say “Yeah, I’ll definitely check it out…”

Fast forward to a few weeks later and you find yourself sitting on your bed scrolling through movies to watch. You’ve already spent an hour alone trying to pick a movie; you’re starting to give up on finding anything and then that one movie your friend told you about pops up. By this time you’re just happy to watch anything so you hit play.

You were right. The movie was point-blank romance; complete with the pulling of the heart strings and youthful firsts, but this time as the credits roll, you sit there feeling full. Your insides suddenly encapsulate the sense that it’s about to burst into a million different colours, and you’re filled with the sudden desire to go out and tell everyone you cross paths with about the beauty you just experienced.

That’s the feeling I got after listening to Pinkish Blu’s “Superstar” for the first time. It’s mellifluous, nostalgic and immediately instilled an incredible amount of warmth and wonder into my soul.

The Adelaide quartet have presented the perfect genre-blend of 80s inspired dream pop, 90s vintage undertones with a modern, alternative twist. They have effortlessly created the vibe that even though at first listen it sounds something that you might have heard before; the more you listen to it, the more you realise it’s like no other. I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of it.

Grasping on to the feeling of love intertwining and literally taking over every little detail of your life, the lyrics are written with great eloquence. Apt and fluent, the soft vocals feel like the butterflies in your stomach following the first hug from your high school love. It simply makes you feel like you are on-top of the world.

It’s been a few days since that moment now. I’m still listening to the track on repeat. My insides did eventually burst into a million different colours, but I think Pinkish Blu might be my new favourite one.
