Here's Proof That Theia Is Not Your Princess
New Zealand’s own queen of avant-pop, THEIA, is back and better than ever, with her new EP “Not Your Princess”, which made its debut in Clash Magazine. The six tracks on the EP are packed with attitude, lyrical prowess, epic bass and crisp 808s against a backdrop of vocal distortion and layerings of exquisite harmonies.
The EP contains the singles “Bye Bye”, co-written with the legendary Mike Elizondo (Eminem, Dr Dre), “Bad Idea”, co-written with Grammy-winning Emily Warren (Chainsmokers), and the ultimate girl power anthems “Candy” and “Not Your Princess”, from which the EP takes its name. There are also two new tracks, including “Honest” co-written and produced by Melbourne artist, Alice Ivy and “Telling Everyone My Name”, which was produced by Australian, ARIA-winning, LA-based producer Tony Buchen (Montaigne, G Flip, Courtney Barnett).
With hints of Charli XCX and M.I.A, this EP is THEIA at her most powerful.
THEIA’s boss-lady mentality is showcased in her music videos, which combine confidence, sass and sing-alongs in the most perfect way.
THEIA emerged in 2015, catching the attention of US tastemaker blogs HillyDilly and Pigeons And Planes with her song “Silver Second”. Her distinctive vocals and exquisite harmonies made a mark and left audiences around the world wanting more. She didn't fail to deliver, following up with “Roam”, which went on to become one of the most successful songs released by a Kiwi artist in 2016. THEIA returned to the charts in 2018 with “Candy”, which saw her break sonic ground with this unapologetic carefree blast of pure energy.
Her six-track debut EP made charts worldwide, and THEIA was announced as a finalist at the 2017 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, which led to her travelling throughout 2017 opening for the Broods on their Summer NZ tour, supporting the Kite String Tangle on an Australian tour, and supporting platinum-selling megastar SIA at her NZ shows.
This EP is just a taste of what THEIA has ahead, and with her already back in the studio writing and recording new material we can’t wait to see what she does next.
