MOUSEY Release High Energy Single “The Bench”
MOUSEY has just revealed the first single from her upcoming album “My Friends” titled “The Bench.” New Zealand based singer-songwriter MOUSEY’s distinct sound defies the restrictions of genre and her music provides a unique and powerful insight into this wonderful and confusing world. She cherishes the art of communicating the human experience above all else and does so with a strong sense of melody and emotionally raw sincerity.
Inspired by such artists as Thom Yorke, Regina Spektor, Paul McCartney, Angel Olsen and Sufjan Stevens. Her vocals stand alone like few others, and listeners find themselves drawn in - transfixed by her songs and the way she tells them.
“Put simply, this is an album about my friends, focused on my friends and my relationships with them.” Said MOUSEY. “My intention was to write an album that was focused on something other than my family, so I decided on the name My friends before I’d even written any of the songs in order to pull my writing into the subject. I initially hoped the album was going to be really light, cute and wholesome. But even though there are many “sweet” songs on the record, my year was really hard and some of my long-time friends left me with some nasty scars - so obviously the record reflects that too. While my last album was about ‘being let down and being a let-down’, and this album is about ‘being let down but being loved’.
Sarena mentions that this album is a huge step up for her production-wise too, as she’s learnt a lot since her first record, ‘My Friends’ which was recorded over the period of a couple of months with Ben Edwards. Her debut album LEMON LAW (2019) marked a significant milestone for MOUSEY, whose star has been on the rise since the release of the album’s first single ‘Extreme Highs’, which earned her a nomination at the 2019 APRA Silver Scrolls. The year 2020 would also see her as a finalist for the Auckland Live Best Independent Debut prize at the Taite awards and performing at the Silver Scroll awards with an impressive performance of LAB’s In the Air.
Speaking on the track’s creative process for the newest single MOUSEY said: “The first incarnation of The Bench was written on my couch. I wanted to make something with crazy high energy by experimenting with key changes to add intensity and it totally worked. The verse chords/melody just fell out and as usual I got addicted to playing it, singing it in the shower, humming it all at the supermarket etc. The song has a sort of charming rage boiling inside it. All of my bad experiences and frustrations with boys needed a constructive outlet, and this song is it.”
The theme of ever changing friendships and relationships, the good and the bad is prominent throughout the album and is showcased perfectly through her latest single ‘The Bench’. With growing success, MOUSEY continues to release heart-wrenching yet relatable lyrics with depth, honey-like vocals and pure talent.
