Boy In Space Charms With Romantic New Hit “U N Eye”
Swedish pop newcomer Boy In Space is one of our favourite acts on the pop scene right now… He is 100% on par with the vocal talent, songwriting skill and overall cuteness of LAUV, Alec Benjamin, and Jeremy Zucker, three of our major obsessions.
He kicked off his 2020 releases with gorgeous track “Caroline”, an earworm of skittering trap-pop which has already hit more than 700,000 streams on Spotify, and has had fans going absolutely crazy in the YouTube comments.
Now our ears have been blessed with his second single of 2020; “U N Eye”. With roots firmly planted in Swedish pop, and influences stretching from Red Hot Chili Peppers to Toto, Boy In Space has a unique sound that fearlessly amalgamates genres.
His stratospheric falsetto and dreamy, nostalgic production are consistently present in his songs, from his breakout hit “7-UP” to our personal favourite, his collaboration with SHY Martin, “On A Prayer”. But even though it has these elements, this track feels a little different… It could be the acoustic guitar, or the vocoder-heavy vocals, but “U N Eye” is a sing-along anthem of an entirely different kind.
Lyrically, the track is a heart-achingly honest ode to a failed relationship, that just makes you want to wrap Boy In Space up in a blanket and protect him from the world. It speaks to the heart of anyone who has tried their hardest to make a relationship work, and been unable to keep it alive.
The track is filled with stunningly poetic lines like, “And you said for the love you would lay your life, but where the hell are you tonight,” and:
“Sometimes we gotta let it go to wasteI know it hurts I see it on your face
Just not the perfect time or perfect place
Youuuuuu and iiii.”
Boy In Space is having a huge year, having recently been announced as the support act to streaming sensation Jeremy Zucker on the European leg of his ‘love is not dying’ tour. The music video for “Caroline” was also premiered on Billboard in February, which shows that Robin is quickly gaining the clout that he and his devoted fan base deserve.
And we haven’t even got to talking about our favourite song of the year yet. Of course, Boy In Space had a hand in it… The incredible “Still The Same” by Shy Martin. This is pop writing at its absolute finest, featuring Lauv-esque flourishes to the lyrics and phrasing, addictive production and stunning vocal performances from both SHY and Boy In Space. The track is utterly incredible work from the two young Swedes.
Despite having not yet released an EP or an album, his thousands of obsessed followers are a testament to the universal appeal of his music and personality. Heading into 2020 with millions of streams on Spotify and acclaim from Paper, Dujour, Just Jared, Ones To Watch, Spindle, and Wonderland, all within a year since his independent emergence in 2018, Boy In Space is set for world domination.
