Athena Joy Is An Enigma, And She Is Here To Stay
Indie-pop singer-songwriter Athena Joy has returned to this music scene with her ominous new single “Just Like You”. Imbued with hauntingly clear vocals and dark pop production, the track is an enchantingly original contribution to the Australian pop scene. Layered with self-reflection, depth and vulnerability, the simplest way to describe this complex track is in one word: authenticity.
Athena Joy notes drawing upon her own emotional journey in her creative process, “I was feeling really sorry for myself in a kind of bitter ironic way - like of course this would happen to me its just like you, but instead of continuing to feel like the victim I wanted to feel like I could also be the strength that brought me out of this situation.”
This track oozes warmth and vulnerability, it feels like a phone call to an old friend that prompts change and reignites strength within. With a message of finding strength in life’s most defeated moments, these lyrics can pinpoint a moment in the lives of every listener, a place of solace and a reminder that the the ability to pick ourselves back up again lies within us all.
“Just Like You” is her first exciting release since she began to build hype in 2018, with her debut EP “Blue” and two singles “Repeat” and “The Weekend” receiving praise from triple j Unearthed presenters and indie music media from around the country. With vocal strength compared to Florence and The Machine and Sia, her music has been described as ‘hauntingly beautiful’ by AAA Backstage and has already earned her a Queensland Music Awards nomination with her second single “Repeat”.
Athena Joy is the solo project of indie-pop singer-songwriter Hannah Joy. Beginning to make music in 2016, Athena Joy has made a name creating edgy tunes exploring heartache and youth, where guitars and angelic vocals meet moody synths. From humble beginnings writing poems about her life and turning them into songs on the piano, her memorable melodies and self-effacing lyrics perfectly convey the experience of growing up.
