Kudu Joy Unveil Their Debut EP "Premonition" Alongside Single "Clarity"
Alt-pop band from Tasmania, Kudu Joy, have just announced their debut EP “Premonition” out today, comprising six enthralling tracks that give us our daily dose of indie groove. The band have also released an accompanying music video for “Clarity”, in addition to the new single.
The concept of the EP follows a narrative of relationships shifting within a life. It starts with the intro track “Premonition”, which opens with the lyric “was I untrue?... even though I’m dreaming, I still chose to be touched by you”, which is about the fog of confusion after waking from a dream that feels so convincingly real, yet a reference to the quiet thoughts that lead you in a good direction. The second track “Dreaming” continues to explore the layer of shame and guilt that settles towards the end of a relationship when you realise you’re starting to move on before it’s finished.
“Undoing” follows, a song about temptation and a continued test of moral balance. In “Fallout” we hear the story of a friendship unraveling as a consequence of “Undoing,” and throughout “Clarity,” the feelings of guilt have started to lift, embracing a new life with new people. The EP finishes with a tender acoustic moment of reflection and the suggestion of potential healing, with the one-verse track “Sweetly”.
Speaking on the EP, Kudu Joy revealed “It’s basically a whole soap opera plot squished into 20 minutes of music.” further revealing, “writing the EP was an arduous hike through my baffled head and heart, as I processed events that had passed. Musically, it was the most fun I’ve had to date. I spent long weekends in Launceston with Jack McLaine from Sumner, and Thomas Hann from Solar Controller developing the tracks, getting pumped over new sections emerging, and simply enjoying the fulfillment of making music with good friends.”
Along with this release, Kudu Joy are continuing their visual story with part two of the EP’s film, which plays to the track “Clarity,” a joyful story of gathering new friends and support, still within this tarot card world.
Lead vocalist, Sabine Bester, expressed her friendships and love ending, changing, shifting, then growing, inspiring her thought and writing process for the track ‘Clarity.’ “I kind of created my own mantra to help me move forward, and embrace the new community I now have around me. Lyrically, it expresses the weightlessness that comes from letting go of toxicity. Musically, it makes me dance, which is eternally good for your health. And visually, it shows a woman in a ridiculous two-piece metallic jacket and shorts (sewn by yours truly), fanging a dirt bike across the West coast of Tassie, then having a bit of a sand dune party with her stunning friends. It's a radiant expression of gratification.”
Kudu Joy lead vocalist and trumpet player Sabine Bester grew up with a love of Australian music having grown up in Tasmania, touring around Australia and playing with her family band, it’s clear that music is in her blood. The band are the perfect concoction of jazz, indie, and soul, being able to touch the soul of many with eclectic and varying music tastes. A rarity in the Australian music scene, we’ll be sure to see the band hitting the stage soon with their hip-shaking and soul-soothing tracks.
The heaven-like vocals that engulf the EP is drenched in purity and acts as a lullaby for the audience to find peace in.
