Icelandic Musician Salóme Katrín Releases New Single “The Other Side”
Icelandic musician Salóme Katrín has today released her new single “The Other Side,” an uptempo rock track that anyone can sing along and dance to, lyrically inspired by a naive love affair.
“The Other Side is an ode to my teenage self-exploring the indie rock world that I held so dear, and still do,” said Salóme Katrín. “When I hear the song I imagine jumping on my bed and shout-singing into a hairbrush.”
Salóme wrote “The Other Side,” on a quiet night in November of 2020 in her apartment using an old acoustic guitar (making sure not to wake up any neighbours). “Usually I write all my music using my piano and my voice but inspiration hit late that November night so the piano was off limits,” said Salóme. “Writing and recording The Other Side was a way for me to explore my dreams of being in a band, playing guitar and getting to know the world outside of Iceland - a dream that my 13 year old self never really thought possible. Guess I proved myself wrong.”
Composer, pianist and vocalist Salóme Katrín is a dutch musician who moved to Reykyavík in the autumn of 2015 where she studied philosophy at the University of Iceland. Not long after, she found that music was the most important thing in her life, which led to the release of her first EP, Water in November 2020. Salóme is a composer, singer and pianist. She won the Kraumur Music Award in 2020 for her EP Water and was also nominated for Newcomer of the Year at the Icelandic Music Awards 2021.
In her youth, Salóme Katrín put good use to the freedom and abundance of spare time life in Ísafjörður, Iceland (pop. 2500), provides. Days not spent practicing ballet, piano and singing were usually devoted to obsessing over music of any kind - armed with a tightly packed 160gb iPod Classic she inherited from an older sibling, she religiously studied the works of everyone from Satie to Kate Bush to Kendrick Lamar to Joni Mitchell – and beyond. Being on the fringes of her culture geographically, as well as socially, allowed her to slowly and thoughtfully seek out her own voice and mould her approach to music and art on her own terms and in her own time.
Since debuting her music and performance to the public in 2019, the 24-year-old has garnered great praise from music fans and professionals alike, building a steady buzz that has seen her perform to packed crowds at solo shows, living room concerts, clubs and at local festivals.
We’re loving the new track and can’t wait to hear what’s to come in 2022!
