BLOXX Provide the Banger We Needed This Week with "Off My Mind"
While UK indie rockers BLOXX aren’t exactly new kids on the block, they certainly know how to keep it fresh with each new release. Their new track, “Off My Mind,” is a testament to that.
The song is a catchy, arena-ready hit that combines pop goodness with grungier undertones — think Wolf Alice meets the 1975 meets Charli XCX. The fast-paced instrumental is a fun distraction from the darker lyrics, which centre around a dysfunctional relationship that has started to benefit from mutual, open dishonesty. It all comes as a surprise, as the opening leaves the listener uncertain as to whether they’re in for a ballad or a banger. While either one would be a treat, the song is revealed to be the latter and comes in the form of an explosive, three-minute anthem that is a certifiable earworm.
BLOXX consists of lead singer Ophelia “Fee” Booth, guitarist Taz Sidhu, bassist Paul Raubišķis and drummer Mozwin Norohna, having formed in West London in 2016. Since its conception, BLOXX have released banger after banger, including their debut single “Your Boyfriend,” “You” and “Novocain.” Booth has noted her influences to include The Specials, the Editors and P!nk, which very much speaks to the punky, rowdy, pop-infused style of music they make. The band have added themselves to a line-up of recent female-fronted bands taking over the male-dominated indie rock/pop scene, with Booth joining the likes of Wolf Alice’s Ellie Roswell and Black Honey’s Izzy Phillips as the badass women raising hell on the radio and in our playlists. Booth has also made it clear that she’s here to empower her fellow LGBTQ+ community members, and we are certainly here for a queer female presence in the indie scene.
Since their joyous arrival, BLOXX have managed to rack up more than two million Spotify streams with only just a few tracks, supported Two Door Cinema Club and the Wombats on tour and have received airplay on Triple J. This is certainly no easy feat for an indie band, and it gives insight into just how phenomenal they are.
We are so keen to hear what BLOXX have in store for us with their upcoming debut album, and if “Off My Mind” is just a taste, we’re ready for the whole damn main course.
