Aya Yves Provides The Sassy Post-Breakup Banger Every Smart Girl Needs
You may remember the gorgeous Aya Yves from her showstopping single “(in)Sanity” from earlier this year. She’s returned again with a new single, “Smart Girls”, a funky, dark and mysterious take on a girl-power anthem.
Subverting the idea of the sassy, post break-up song, “Smart Girls” uses unique production techniques and a breathier side of Aya’s powerful vocals to convey a sense of strength and power.
“Breakups tend to make us question who we are, who we were in that relationship and what we can learn for next time. I walked into my session with Bri and Jordi coming off the tail end of a breakup, where my sense of self had taken a beating,” said Aya. “What is now the chorus, was originally said as a joke! But when we tried it, it felt sassy in all the right ways. ‘Smart Girls’ is about that reflection on a relationship, and knowing that at the end of the day - you did all you could, you’re a badass, but the relationship wasn’t right for you.”
“Smart Girls” co-written with Bri Clark and Jordi White, is our second helping of Aya Yves, after she revealed her debut single, “(in)Sanity” earlier in the year. Another collaboration with Australian producer Xavier Dunn, whose impressive catalogue also crosses genres and styles (Jack River, CXLOE, Graace, Carmada, Peking Duk), the single was promptly added to rotation on triple j Unearthed.
With live gigs slowly returning, Aya Yves is now also set to play Live In Ya Local alongside Hands Like Houses on Saturday August 29th.
We’ve heard whispers that more music is coming before the end of the year, and we cannot wait!
