Aya Yves’ delights with the release of exciting new EP “What We Look Like With the Light On”
Aya Yves releases highly anticipated EP “What We Look Like With the Light On,” and it is packed with everything the young Australian songstress is known and loved for. After a massively successful 2020, including the release of critically acclaimed singles “(in)Sanity,” “Smart Girls,” “Dear E.” and “Brave,” Aya Yves showcases her profound songwriting abilities, with beautifully layered instrumentals accompanying her angelic tone throughout the EP.
Bringing stories of navigating heartache, love and human flaws, the EP features “Body That I Break,” “With The Light On,” the track that Aya considers an almost centrepiece of the EP and previously critically acclaimed singles “(in)Sanity” and “Smart Girls,” both of which found rotation on triple j’s Home and Hosed.
The EP opens with the stunning “(in)Sanity,” which amassed 30,000 streams in just two months and received nationwide radio play on triple j’s Home and Hosed, the track glistens with Aya’s signature ethereal vocals accompanied by a powerful beat that highlights the power in the lyrics. “Body That I Break” is an ode to the tribulations of on-again, off-again relationships where fears of getting hurt impact both people. The fourth song on the EP, “With The Light On'' was one of the key centrepieces of the EP.
“I felt it was a good way of encapsulating the songs on the EP. They’re all about relationships, human flaws, really - the human experience, in all its bruised and battered glory.” says Aya.
Aya Yves is the brainchild of a Cooma born Canberra native Vendulka. Born from a love of pushing boundaries and breaking expectations, Aya contrasts light airy vocals with dark, brooding and quirky production. The Aya Yves project has been taken far from Vendulka’s folk music roots, however, still manages to keep the vulnerability and unifying connection that folk music is known for.
